Swimming in the Azores? It’s rarely just about sandy beaches here.
Instead, you often immerse yourself in incredible natural pools, formed within dark, solidified lava flows.
These unique swimming spots, known locally as ‘zonas balneares’, are a defining feature found across all nine islands of the archipelago.
A word of caution however. The Atlantic can be extremely powerful, and even these seemingly protected pools can sometimes be affected by strong swells or unexpected waves.
