TARLAIR POOLS
A place in Scotland I bet you didn’t know…
Tucked away at the foot of a sea cliff near Macduff, Aberdeenshire, lies Tarlair Swimming Pool.
It’s a striking Art Deco lido. It’s said to be the best example of an outdoor seaside pool in Scotland.
Locals told me about the good old days when busloads of families used to come to visit this amazing spot.
Even Jethro Tull once played an open-air gig here.
And it’s more than just a pool. It's surrounded by a wild, rocky coastline with beautiful sea stacks and arches.
But then, the tide turned. From 1931 until the mid-nineties it thrived, but eventually, the complex fell into disrepair, left abandoned amongst the wild beauty of the coast.
Fortunately, that’s not the end of the tale. A local trust is breathing life back into it. The main building is already gleaming again, reborn as a lovely café. Hopes are high for the swimming pools too – they're expected to make a comeback in the next few years.
