ERG CHIGAGA

THE SEA OF SANDS

During my travels in Morocco, I had the incredible opportunity to stay at a desert camp in the mesmerising Erg Chigaga dunes for a few nights. The term "Erg" translates to "Sea of dunes," and Erg Chigaga stands as the largest and most pristine Erg in all of Morocco, boasting towering sand dunes that reach heights of up to 300 metres.
Reaching Erg Chigaga, situated near M'Hamid, was an adventure in and of itself. The absence of roads meant that the journey required traversing the rugged terrain either by 4x4 vehicle or by camel.
The highlight of my desert camp stay was undoubtedly the breathtaking view from atop a dune at sunset. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the untouched sand dunes were bathed in a warm, golden light, creating a truly unforgettable spectacle.
Interestingly, due to exceptionally rare rainfall the previous year, the desert landscape was surprisingly green, a stark contrast to the typical arid image of a desert. This unexpected touch of greenery added a unique dimension to the scenery and highlighted the resilience and adaptability of nature.
During my time in Erg Chigaga, I also had the chance to visit the local culture by experiencing Nomad tent life and witnessing their traditional bread-baking methods. Observing the Nomads' way of life and their deep connection to the desert environment provided valuable insights into their rich cultural heritage and resourcefulness.
