AIT BENHADDOU

THE FAMOUS FILM LOCATION

Situated along the former caravan route that once connected the Sahara Desert to the bustling city of Marrakesh, Ait Benhaddou served as a vital trading post. The ksar's earthen buildings, adorned with intricate details, blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, creating a scene that seems frozen in time.
Arriving at Ait Benhaddou before sunrise down at the river is highly recommended. As the first rays of light bathe the town in a warm glow, the ksar reveals its true magic. The absence of crowds at this early hour allows for a peaceful and immersive exploration.
If you are lucky - the river has some water (which is not always the case) and you can take photos of the ksar and kasbah with reflections.
After sunrise, cross the bridge and start your exploration with a climb up the hill, where a maze of narrow alleys awaits. These winding pathways lead to hidden courtyards, ancient mosques, and traditional Berber homes.
At the summit of the hill, breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape unfold. The vast desert stretches out in all directions, dotted with palm groves and distant villages. At this vantage point, you'll also find an ancient agadir, a fortified granary that once played a crucial role in the ksar's food security.
Ait Benhaddou's historical significance and architectural beauty have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
